Tele-therapy

What is tele-therapy?

Tele-therapy is the delivery of speech/language therapy through secure, interactive, online video chat. Tele-speech therapy allows a clinician to connect with a patient remotely for assessment, intervention, and/or consultation.

Does tele-therapy work as well as on-site therapy?

Yes! Just like on-site therapy, a face-to-face connection is made between the SLP and patient. The SLP can engage your child in therapeutic activities through the use of personalized materials, presentations, and interactive features of the online platform — in addition to tactical items that can be provided with the help of parents during the session.

Does insurance cover tele-therapy?

Yes. Your insurance should cover a tele-speech therapy session in the same way it would cover an on-site therapy session.

What are the benefits of tele-therapy?

Tele-speech therapy offers the following benefits:

  • Accessibility for:
    • Patients living in remote areas
    • Families with transportation limitations
    • Parents with busy or hectic schedules
    • Families who prefer a convenient alternative to traditional on-site therapy
  • Improved communication and transparency between the SLP and parents
  • Flexible, timely therapy sessions with reduced wait times

Is tele-therapy right for everyone?

Tele-speech therapy is not right for every child. Unlike on-site interactions, the SLP is not able to use tactile cues or physical redirection without the assistance of a parent/caregiver. Factors that may impact a child’s ability to benefit from tele-therapy include:

  • Hearing and visual ability
  • Ability to maintain attention
  • Willingness of family/caregiver to participate in sessions
  • Availability of technology
  • Environment

What are the technical requirements?

You will need an internet connection in order to participate in a tele-speech session, as well as:

  • Computer, tablet, or smartphone; computers are recommended.
  • Internal/external web camera
  • Internal/external microphone and speakers
  • Headphones are recommended.
  • Latest version of your web browser
  • Adequate internet connection speed; 3 Mbps connection speed is recommended. Test your connection speed here.

Are tele-therapy sessions secure?

Yes. Buttercup Speech Therapy uses TheraPlatform for all our sessions. TheraPlatform complies with all federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. This platform also conducts annual risk assessment to ensure that they continue to meet HIPAA standards, and protected patient information remains secure.
